“And Mary said: “My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit
rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the
humble state of his servant. From now on all generations
will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great
things for me–holy is his name.”
When we think of Mary, we think of God’s perfect choice to bring human Jesus into the world, of the best mother to raise a young savior. And we’re right, but Mary’s own words tell us she saw her role in a different light. She lived to serve her God, and in that way, we can all be just like her.
We can remember Mary’s choice when our own work seems hard, and we can look at all we do as a beautiful chance to serve in the way God’s chosen. None of us has Mary’s responsibility, but each member of your family has a life equally set aside by God to serve His purposes. We can trust that God’s given us each a game plan as surely as we can trust He selected Mary. And we can meet Him right there in the manger, just as she did.
Each choice we make to serve today leads us to more opportunity tomorrow. It’s a gift He’s given us–to be able to partner with Him and make a difference in the lives of those around us. In your home, caring for each other and loving and helping each other serves God.
In your community, telling others about our Savior and sharing what you have with them serves God. Every act small or large that shows God to someone else is an act of worship. It’s God’s gift we have the pleasure of giving away again and again, Christmas Day and every day.
Father, thank You for giving us so many opportunities to worship You by serving You. Please show us how to serve You today.
Choose a service you can do as a family, perhaps invite a new neighbor for a meal or help a relative with shopping or cleaning. Talk to your children as you work about Jesus and how we’re worshiping Him and serving Him when we reach out to others in help or support, and that’s a gift to Him from us!
