“Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.” – 2 Timothy 2:15
I am going to demonstrate a simple, yet accurate way to understand the entire New Testament. It will divide the new testament into three sections, showing the progression of knowing Christ, joining Christ and following Christ.
All Christians want to know God’s word and follow it as their rule of faith and practice. There is an old strategy for the study and understanding of scripture, the same used to study and understand all correspondence. You answer the questions: who, what, when, where and why. Who wrote it, to whom was it written, when was it written and even knowing where it was written can assist us in understanding the Bible and applying it to our life.
The Bible instructs us to:
Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. – 2 Timothy 2:15 (NIV)
Other translations expand on this worthy incentive, such as:
- “be diligent…rightly dividing the word of truth” (NKJV)
- “accurately handling the word of truth” (NASB)
- “study to show thyself approved” (KJV)
- “give diligence…handling aright the word of truth” (ASV)
- “do your best…rightly handling the word of truth” (RSV)
So, let’s do our best, give due diligence and study appropriately, the New Testament, so that we may correctly and accurately handle the Bible, making us a skillful and informed student of the Word of God.
If we fail to “rightly divide” the word of truth, we will get into trouble attempting to apply it to our lives. We will fail both to recognize who specific sections were written to and their intended purpose.
Let’s be like the people in the town of Brea who Paul began to teach them about Jesus Christ:
“…they received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily, to see weather these things were so.” – Acts 17:11
Let’s understand the Word of God and apply its life-changing truth to our lives.
The New Testament is the record of God’s Son and our Savior; the impact He has made throughout the world; and the miraculous change He has brought to the lives of those who made the choice to follow Him.
God divinely laid out the books of the New Testament into three progressive and distinct sections, each with its own purpose. Once you understand the layout of the New Testament, you can better understand what it contains. Here are the tree distinct sections in the New Testament:
Over the next few articles, we will dive into each of these three sections of the New Testament and learn how we can correctly handle the word of truth.
