When Jesus dies on the cross and exclaimed in ”It is finished,” he was saying:
My obedience is finished and perfect and you need it, My suffering is finished and you need it to cover your sin, I have finished covering sin, I have removed the wrath of God
I have finished striking satan the death blow!
My saving work is done, my mission is accomplished!
Because my mission is finished, your mission begins!
The wondrous thing is that the mission is done through me and you!
Augustin – Without God we cannot, with us, God will not!
Its not called the Great Mission, its the great CO-Mission! its us together with God doing the work!
21 Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.”
20 Very truly I tell you, whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me.”
2 Corinthians 5:20
20 We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God.
The mission begins where redemption ends and the Cross!
Our great task is to spread this news to every nation on the planet!
18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
What is the nature of that commission
What is the scope of that commission
What is the authority behind that commission
What is the encouragement behind the commission
1) What is the nature of this commission:
We are to make disciples! What is a disciple, a student, a learner, one who follows a master and comes under their tutelage and authority. Then we baptize those disciples!
We: GO -> MAKE DISCIPLES (one word in GK) -> BAPTIZE -> Teach
1 What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase?2 By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? 3 Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.
We baptize them into a newness of live, by the power of the Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit)!
“I belog to Jesus, I have full and complete allegiance to Jesus, I am dead to sin, I am alive with Christ, I am walking in a newness of life! Moved from darkness to light!”
We are called out of the world to go back into the world to draw people into that kind of newness of life!
Then, teach them everything! Not just to be in a right relationship with Jesus, but to be like Jesus! To live the life that he lives!
Make a disciple & baptizing them = Justification!
Teaching to obey = Sanctification
The mission of the commission is to go and preach the Gospel in such a way, with such boldness that it brings people to salvation through Christ, but utterly changes them and the world around them forever!
That is the nature of this mission!
2) What is the scope of this mission:
He says, “All nations” = Ethna (GK) (Ethnic groups)
The word nations doesn’t mean Germany, Korea, Kasickstan…
It means Philippinos, Korean’s, American’s…there are over 16,000 different ethnic groups in the world today! All of them need Jesus!
Get them all, find them all, preach to them all! I want my kingdom to be that diverse, that vast!
**Story of Oleg & Claudette and couple in park on Friday night!
The scope is all the peoples! We have a lot of work still to do! We are still in our infancy as a movement, we are planting churches around the world, but those churches do not have near the reach that God would have them! It starts with the nations on your campus, at your workplace, at your gym, in your neighborhoods!
3) The authority of the commission?
I preached a lesson to the KK workers on this subject earlier today!
Think about this, our commission is to go into those nations, and essentially tell them…to their face, that what they believe about God is wrong and they need to change…
Think about that for a moment. I walk up to a Budest and tell them that all the faith and works that they have accomplished for their “god” is wrong! A moralist, I tell them that everything that they did was in vain because they did it for their own sake and not to glorify God…and I tell them that they need to change.
Such audacity! How dare I do that? How dare we go from one culture to another and tell them that they are wrong?! We do this as a nation…it’s called colonialism! And many think that it’s this idea as a nation that gets us into so much trouble around the world…BUT we are called to do just that for Jesus!
Because Jesus has all authority, and in doing so, has given us all authority to GO and MAKE DISCIPLES!
This is what sets us apart from other religions, we believe in a God that has all authority, and because he has all authority, we know that he has put all of his authority into a book called the Bible and we know that when we are living our lives according to his authority, in the Bible that we are saved!
We also know that if someone is not doing so, they are not saved and the only way that they can be saved is if we tell them!
We have this authority from Jesus himself, which was given to Him by the Father!
This should give us great courage to stand up for God in our circles of influence! Jesus has our back! We are his ambassadors…with the full weight and power of his authority at our backs! If we truly grasped this, we would be unstoppable!
4) What about the encouragement that we have in this commission!
What does Jesus say to us that should give us encouragement to do this?
“I will be with you always…”
Something interesting in the book of Matthew! It begins with God with us and ends with God with us!
23 “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel”[a] (which means “God with us”).
20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Many of our brothers and sisters are risking their lives, their reputations, their ego;s for the sake of the gospel! What are we risking?
We will never be alone! No matter what! God is with us! Jesus is with us, and he adds the clarification…ALWAYS! Not sometimes, not just when we are righteous, not just when we are sharing our faith, or just when we “feel” his presence, but ALWAYS!!!
I love the song “What a friend we have in Jesus!”
He is always there! Do you have a friend like that? When everything in life is failing, when everything is going crazy!
And that, a friend with all authority!
With these in mind, lets go do this!
Lets trust his presence with us, lets bank of his authority, and lets go make and teach disciples of all nations!
