Free in Surrender Holiday Devotional – Day 22

“When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled,

and all Jerusalem with him…Then Herod, when he

had secretly called the wise men, determined from them

what time the star appeared. And he sent them to Bethlehem

and said, “Go and search carefully for the young Child,

and when you have found Him, bring back word to me,that I may come and worship Him also.”

Matthew 2:3, 7-8 (NKJV)

King Herod was afraid, “troubled,” and threatened by what he didn’t understand. Because hew as afraid of having to give up his power to a superior king, he turned to a life of trickery, deceit, and suspicion, when he could’ve chosen to worship the Christ Child instead.

Sadly, he misunderstood Jesus’ power, believing that it was power that took away from him when it’s actually power that gives to us more than we can imagine.

No earthly king can set us free when we surrender to him, but that’s exactly what Jesus does. The best order for our lives is Jesus at the top, our Savior who came on Christmas to be with us forever. Surrendering to Him means simply opening our hearts so that we have Him to guide and direct us in every situation we face. And in surrendering to Him, we are free, in bondage to no one, to no ideals that are counter to our Lord’s.

Families together are strong and protective, and we willingly surrender to the circle of those we love. Our surrendering to Jesus makes us strong and protected, and it’s a choice we get to make and encounter others to make, too. Christmas is a great time for surrender.

Father, thank You for the kingdom of our hearts where Jesus rules and for the choice to surrender to You and live in peace.

Draw a basic organizational chart with a box for Jesus at the top, an arrow drawn down, and a photo or simple drawing of each family member. Explain to your children that when Jesus is in charge of our lives, we’re free of worry and fear because we trust God to be in control and hold us safely in His hands.
